What to Avoid whenever You’re Applying (or how to conquer your senior fall)

The time had come. My bachelor’s level ended up being newly in hand, and I decided to accept the first job I was being offered ( it absolutely was the Great Recession and driving a car of unemployment was very real). Thankfully, using highschool seniors as they navigated the college application process turned out to be always a great fit for me! I learned many things working at a highschool (did you know there’s a software that calculates the likelihood you are going to get a snowfall day?!), and each fall was a class in exactly how difficult it is to be always a 12th grader.

Senior year is tough! You’re in your hardest classes up to now, you’re taking on more duties, you’re hitting a milestone nearly every week…and then we ask you to college. 12th grade may never be easy, however you can simply make it less hard. Though each pupil’s college process is unique, you can find a handful of behaviors/mind sets that I have observed cause stress that is unnecessary and time again. Some call them the Four Horseman of the Common Appocalypse (and by some I mean me personally), but they’re all avoidable knowing how exactly to recognize the signs!

Focusing too much on what you can’t change.

Would you keep worrying about that C you got in freshman English? Are you regretting your final decision to stop the track team? Many students invest their fall that is senior focusing the past, and it drains their time and energy like Snapchat drains my phone battery pack. In the place of stressing about things you can’t change, spend time writing a well thought out essay, striving for great senior 12 months grades, and putting together the most readily useful application you can. Think upward and onward!

Ignoring the advice of your elders.

Do you nod as soon as your therapist speaks then instantly wipe the conversation from your memory? Do you reject your parents’ guidance like it is your work? I am shocked…really, I am. Keep in brain that, as they might not always be ‘hip and with it,’ the adults in your life can offer important insight into your application procedure (and also assist you identify your strengths so that you can better highlight them). Ignoring their advice can cut you removed from some pretty valuable information, so why don’t you take most of the help you can get?

Dropping in love.

No, we’m not talking about the lab partner you’ve had a crush on for a long time (them already) though you should really just tell! I am talking about the head-over-heels students that are feeling get for one university on their list. There’s a distinction between having a very first option and being so fixated for a school which you can not even fathom going elsewhere. It’s called the faculty process for a reason—no one knows exactly how it shall end! You are admitted to your top choice (and obviously I hope your top choice is USC), I strongly encourage you to keep an open mind and find a number of institutions you would love to attend though I sincerely hope.

Are you currently making things to your minute that is last? Are you putting off looking up what supplementary essays you need to write? Have you been reading this post on January 14th? You are procrastinating! Despite what you may tell your self, no one works royal casino las vegas nevada most useful under pressure (trust me…this is a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ situation). Multiple drafts would be the key up to a good essay, and making significant progress before the eleventh hour is the sole defense against an application that is sloppy. You have got enough in your plate year that is senior. If you do not have a plan yet for how you are going to complete all of your essays, supplements, applications, etc. make one! That you do not wish to rush (or worse, forget something) in this technique. So stop looking over this weblog and get to work—I know you may do it!

Pupil Highlight: USC Student Body President, Edwin Saucedo

Hey All,

It’s Natalie Guevara and I’m excited to begin working with our weblog. While discovering topic ideas, I thought of common concerns we get from potential students and another of my favorites is often: what’s it like to be described as a pupil at USC? And even though I’m an alumna of the college and had my own great experiences…I actually want you to listen to from current pupils with a bigger range of majors/involvement/background/etc. So rather than hear about all of the cool things I have to say (many of you get enough of that), I’ll find current students to let you know about their experiences. The student Body President for the Undergraduate Student Government for our first installment, we have Edwin Saucedo. He is originally from South Gate, CA and is set to graduate this May that is coming 2017. Some tips about what he previously to state:

Four years ago, I found myself where many of perhaps you are right now: frustrated with my personal statement and fed up with searching for the perfect college. It was hard enough trying to navigate university applications when neither of my parents spoke English or had pursued advanced schooling themselves. The stress of finding the best place to spend the next four years was extremely overwhelming.

Than I could have ever expected as I think back at my college application process the first thing I have to say is, everything worked out better. Whenever I applied to college we never ever thought i might find yourself at USC. I grew up in South Gate, CA where only 6% for the population that is total a college degree. It goes without saying, We never imagined I would personally find myself being the pupil Body President my senior year right here. The four years in between my year that is senior of school and senior year of college have induced a wide range of classes, experiences, and friendships we never expected. However, the combination of all these life that is unexpected has indeed led me to where I am today.

Being pupil Body President at perhaps one of the most prestigious universities in the country is an daunting job. It isn’t easy trying to express nearly 19,000 students who result from over 100 different countries, are of all different races, and have very diverse backgrounds that are economic. However, it is additionally a tremendously opportunity that is rewarding. Every i get to go into our student government office and ask myself: how can I make this university a better place for all students day? That is our goal in student government, to create the very best undergraduate experience, and that’s why I made the decision to run for this position spring that is last.

I invest at the least twenty hours every week listening to students’ experiences, asking them just how I possibly could be of any service, and connecting them to the channels that are proper this campus. On one other part of things, we advocate on their behalf to administration in efforts to generate better campus policies, address any presssing issues, and plan for future years of our campus. My favorite part however is taking the information and knowledge I discovered from both students and administrators and picking out unique solutions to addressing these issues.

In student government we pride ourselves in being innovators and thinkers that are creative. We challenge each other’s ideas and provides suggestions on improvements. During the end of the day, we produce proposals how to address each and each issue. It is through these creative proposals that we have been able to get our students uber that is free from 7pm to 2 am and have actually gotten a weekly farmers market on campus. But our work doesn’t end there. Over the span of the year our student government sets on over 300 free events for our pupils. These vary from intimate conversations about our education system to bringing speakers like Laverne Cox or performers like Diplo for all of our students to take pleasure from.

We shape the experience that is undergraduate give students the ability to explore perspectives beyond their own; because that is really what university is about. Regardless of whether pay a visit to USC or choose elsewhere as your house, dare to challenge yourself and be challenged by other people. As President I always encounter students perspectives that differ from my very own, they’re not right or wrong but different, and that is okay.

As you approach the final months of the college application process don’t worry the maximum amount of about where you certainly will wind up, but alternatively that which you will do when you get there. College is time to explore and find your passion. I found my passion within student federal government and working towards increasing USC for current and students that are future. For you, that passion might lie in another activity. Regardless, enjoy your last months of high school and get prepared to embark in a new journey complete of unique and exciting experiences. Best of luck on signing up to college and that we always Fight On if you ever get disillusioned, remember that what makes Trojans strong is!
